Teaching Guide
FRQ Exam Setup
Students practice a complete free response exam (4 questions). Access the AP Computer Science A: The Exam resource to find the most recent free response questions available.
We recommend using the the most recent exam available on the AP Computer Science A Past Exam Questions resource or the 2020 Practice Exam found in AP Classroom. Practice exams from previous years include topics that the current framework no longer covers.
Exams in the AP Computer Science A: The Exam and AP Computer Science A Past Exam Questions resources are publicly available and include additional resources from the College Board including:
- Chief Reader Report
- Scoring Statistics
- Student Samples and Commentary
The 2020 Practice Exam on AP Classroom is only available to teachers and does not include these additional resources.
Activity (45 minutes)
Exam Setup (5 minutes)
Remarks
You will start the FRQ portion of our mock exam today.
You will use a No. 2 pencil to write your responses. Please raise your hand if you need a No. 2 pencil.
Distribute: Give a sharpened No. 2 pencil to students who raised their hands.
Remarks
I will now distribute the exam materials. Please do not turn over any materials until told to do so.
Distribute: Place a copy of the FRQ Mock Exam, Java Quick Reference, four FRQ answer sheets, and a sheet of scratch paper faced down on each student’s desk.
Remarks
In front of you, you should have a copy of the FRQ Mock Exam, Java Quick Reference handout, four FRQ answer sheets, and a sheet of scratch paper. Please raise your hand if you are missing any exam materials.
Distribute: Give any missing exam materials to students who raised their hands.
Remarks
On each answer sheet, print your name, period, and today’s date where indicated.
Do This: Direct students to fill in their names, period, and the current date on the answer sheets.
FRQ Mock Exam (40 minutes)
Remarks
On the FRQ section of the exam, you are given 90 minutes to complete 4 free response questions. Today, you will have 40 minutes to start the FRQ section of the mock exam. You will have the next lesson to finish the free response questions. Although the timing is slightly shorter than the actual exam, you will be able to practice the complete FRQ section of the AP CSA Exam.
You may write on your scrap paper and answer sheet; however, only responses on the answer sheet will be scored. Do not write on your Java Quick Reference or the mock exam. These will be reused, and you might not receive the same document next class that you have today.
You are responsible for pacing yourself over the two lessons and may proceed freely between all four questions. On each FRQ answer sheet, be sure to fill in the circle that corresponds to the question that you are answering.
Good luck! You may now begin the exam.
Do This: Students start the FRQ mock exam. On the board, write the start and end times.
Remarks
Great work! Time is up. Please stop working and close your exam. Remain in your seat, without talking, while the exam materials are collected.
Tomorrow you will finish the FRQ section of the mock exam! Since this mock exam is a chance for you to assess your progress to improve and review, you will get more out of it if you do not look up or discuss the exam with anyone outside of class.
Do This: Collect the FRQ Mock Exam, Java Quick Reference, answer sheets, and scrap paper from each student.
